How to create seamless carousel posts for Instagram

Comments · 405 Views

so you're scrolling on instagram and come across a really cool and engaging post that's just begging you to swipe it the elements of the post flow nicely into one another and it feels truly seamless from one post to the next this is called a carousel post.

In this blog i'm going to show you exactly how you can create a seamless one just like this but i'll also be telling you why carousel posts are such a good idea if you're a designer trying to attract clients or a creative of any sort for that matter so let's jump into the design for this i'll be using illustrator but if you don't have the adobe software or aren't as design savvy you can use platforms like canva.

To create something similar so the first step is setting your artboards up correctly in order to create that seamless effect the size of my artboards are 1080 by 1080 and they must follow after one another so to do this head to the artboards panel at the bottom right press rearrange all artboards set the layout to arrange by bro make sure it's on left to right layout order and the spacing is set to zero.

Now when you add a new artboard it will follow this rule before we go any further with the design why are carousel posts a good idea well there are multiple reasons but in this blog i'm going to focus on the main two the first being that they give you a chance to showcase your work over multiple posts so for us creatives especially designers it's ideal as it gives us a chance to show a whole branding project i cannot explain how powerful these posts have been for showcasing client work and how effective they have been in getting new enquiries through it's essentially a portfolio that potential clients can just swipe through without having to read any text.

The majority of creative work is visual so use that to your advantage the second reason you should be putting out these types of posts is something that a lot of people fail to consider on social media it's actually something that is key for post engagement and can even help grow your account but we'll dive more into that later in the blog first we need to start putting some assets together to use on the post we'll be using assets from the branding project flipped that was designed in a previous blog.

We're aiming to show all of the brand elements in the best possible way and treat it like we're telling a story about the brand to do this we'll need to include logos mock-ups color palettes brand illustrations and assets and relevant imagery so i've added all of these to the side of my artboard so i can choose what assets to use and decide as we go it's great to note here that it's good to have your mockups like packaging exported as pngs from photoshop so without the backgrounds.

These are going to be used as the overlapping elements within our post so our first post should be used as a way of engaging the viewer to make them stop scrolling on their feed and entice them into swiping to see more so i'm gonna use a mock-up of the pancake packaging and overlap this halfway onto the second art board so i'm just gonna increase the size to make it fit exactly where i want it so next i want to include one of the brand colors as a background and showcase the primary logo remember to create something seamless the design shouldn't fit within the art board but should actually extend out of it so the logo is going to be enlarged and fit across the art board.

A half this then gives the viewer a larger view of the typography and design there is nothing worse when a post has tiny text or small imagery so what's the second reason you should be putting out carousel post well i mentioned it was an overlooked thing but it's the fact it creates an interactive element within the post that being that the user has to swipe to see more this makes it much more interactive for the consumer keeping them engaged and a post that is more engaging is pushed more on instagram meaning a higher potential of it being shown to a potential client or customers.

But don't be mistaken there's one crucial thing that we must do when designing these types of posts to make the viewer actually want to swipe and i'm about to show you exactly what it is but first we need to deal with that harsh line in the post where the imagery stops and the color starts which doesn't look great as it breaks that seamless feel to fix this we can use objects or imagery to hide the line so what i'm thinking is downloading some like syrup drips that would be added onto pancakes as toppings and then using something like this will keep it relevant to the brand.

As well so to source these syrup drips i'm heading over to envato elements who are today's sponsor of the blog so today i am just looking for stock photo of some syrup but they also give me access to so many fonts and mock-ups so if you're creative using envato is a no-brainer if you want to check them out make sure to click the first link in my description so i have sourced the perfect syrup drip now to remove the white background i'm using photoshop and i'm using the magic eraser tool as it is a very simple image so i'm just pressing the tool on the white background to remove the background and it is gone so i'm going to export this as a png.

It can be added to our post let's add it into illustrator in order to get rid of that harsh line so i'm just going to turn it slightly and make it a little bigger in order to create a really nice downward drip effect this is looking really cool already so i now need to use the pencil tool to shape that green color behind the source and create a really nice flow within the post so i'm just connecting the pencil with the path and adding onto the box that is already there just need to increase the mock-up image just a little bit so it actually fits and this actually looks better than what was in my head so that harsh line has now gone and it's added some great movement into the post by also using up half of an artboard.

It creates that curiosity for the viewer wanting to know more which then keeps them scrolling i just want to take a quick break from designing and show you a previous carousel post that was created for a brand notice the common theme the overlapping of objects shapes and images this is what gives the post a seamless feel remember when i said there's one crucial thing you need to do when designing a carousel post to make it engaging this is it you have to make the viewer want to swipe you have to make them want to engage with the post but how do you do this by showing them a sneak peek of what's on the next page.

It's the reason authors end chapters on cliffhangers they want you to keep reading now you know how powerful carousel posts can be let's finish off the design so you know exactly how to create them so to keep the post really interesting i like to break it up into sections of showing mock-ups then branding and then back to mock-ups otherwise it can get really boring so the next thing i want to do is to create a color change into another of the brown colors and i'm thinking of using the beige color here so i'm going to add a colored rectangle and just eye drop the beige color from our colored boxes now we don't want that harsh line again so we're going to use png mock-ups in order to overlap and cover that harsh line so i'm going to copy and paste the packaging um and use the png to align it over my post.

Just cover up that line the viewer can then see the packaging at a different angle and close up next to carry on telling the brand story i think it would be good to use some imagery of some pancakes so the viewer can really understand the brand and start craving some food so this image is sourced from mimato and i really love the syrup on it which connects nicely with that syrup drip at the start of the post consistency is key when creating a seamless post so once again this image is the place not in the center of the artboard but overlapping the two artboards a common theme.

I use to keep the post interactive at the moment the background is looking a little plain so i'm gonna add in another brown color of cream and create some really nice drip effects so i'm using the pencil tool to add in these drips and i'm just dragging the tool in order to create my desired shapes if you're not sure on how to use a pencil tool i've actually got a recent blog that can help you master the tool as it is a very handy tool to be using as a designer okay so i'm just going to continue to neaten this up a little until i'm happy with it next i'm thinking i want to add in some chocolate sauce drizzle to direct your eyes to the pancake and also hide where that cream line ends.

I'm just going to send this behind the pancake and add some more depth into this post the only thing i think i need to adjust is that cream color to shape behind the sauce and then cover the line of that color once again i'm using the pencil tool just to adjust the shape okay perfect this is coming together so nicely and i'm so excited to see the end result so next i think it would be great to add in some typography that matches the logo so the viewer can clearly see how the font is being used within the branding this brand heavily focuses on being a low calorie pancake mix so simply adding low calorie pancakes to the post shows the branding in action and continues to help the viewer understand the brand more so i'm going to send the typography to sit behind the chocolate sauce and create that consistent overlapping feeling.

I am also going to add an arrow to the pancakes and above the typography as the gap allows for it so i'm just using the brush tool in order to create the arrow lines this also helps direct the eyes and keeps the viewer engaged i've currently got two artboards left to fill by the way instagram currently allows for you to have 10 posts within a carousel but don't feel like you have to use them all for this one i'm using nine artboards so i've got some mock-ups of advertising posters and i think that they would be good to overlap here and look as if they were street posters covering a billboard this fits in with our common theme of overlapping which keeps everything nice and consistent once again these are pngs and i'm just placing them in a messy overlapping way to create the desired feel the chocolate drizzle.

Also leads your eyes into the poster and keeps consistent with the sauce at the start of the post okay it is beautiful and i thought i was finished with the post but i have just had an incredible idea possibly one that is going to take this post to the next level flower no i'm not talking beautiful flowers that grow outside i'm talking sifted flowers used within baking and within the pancake mix so i found some sprinkles or flour that is just going to add some texture to this post so i'm going to place it near the packaging and use the transparency panel and screen setting to get rid of the black background and voila.

I'm going to continue to add this into some more areas of the post and just see what it looks like using imagery and little things are like the flower that relate to the product or brand can really help elevate showcasing this brand identity so we've now designed the post how do we export it and then post it to instagram it is very simple press file export for screens and then the format is jpeg 100 and then i usually set this to scale times 3 which helps increase the quality for when i post press export artboards.

Now these will be saved as individual posts but when put together make up that seamless carousel post now just airdrop or send these over to your phone now head over to instagram click on your posts and make sure to add them in the correct order or this will completely mess up that seamless flow add a caption and press post and it should look something like this now go and share some love on my instagram post because it's currently live on my page you've seen me create an interactive post for this brand identity but did you catch the full design process where i designed this brand from scratch go.
